Usage

Description

α-Galactosidase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of terminal, non-reducing α-D-galactose residues in α-D-galactosides. It is involved in the metabolism of complex carbohydrates and plays a crucial role in various biological processes.

Uses

Used in Enzyme Activity Assays:
α-Galactosidase is used as an enzyme activity indicator for comparing the activity of different α-galactosidase sources, such as Alkaline α-Galactosidase I and α-Gal A isolated and purified from Sf-9 insect cells infected with a recombinant baculovirus encoding the normal α-Gal A gene. This is done using 2 mmp-nitrophenyl-α-d-galactoside as a substrate at pH 6.5.
Used in Antibody Specificity Assessment:
α-Galactosidase from green coffee beans is used as a target enzyme to assess the specificity of anti-α-Galactosidase antibodies, which is important for understanding the immune response and developing diagnostic tools.
Used in Inhibition Assays:
α-Galactosidase is also used in inhibition assays to evaluate the activity of N-guanidino derivatives of 1,5-dideoxy-1,5-imino-d-xylitol, which can help in the development of potential therapeutic agents targeting α-galactosidase-related diseases or conditions.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cleaves α(1→3)- and α(1→6)-linked, non-reducing terminal galactose from complex carbohydrates and glycoproteins. It is particularly efficient for removing α-linked galactose under conditions where the pH must be neutral or above, for example, with live cells.
