MESOMORPHIC PROPERTIES OF 4-n-PENTYLBIPHENYL DERIVATIVES.
Dabrowski,Zytynski
, p. 109 - 135 (1982)
Several 4-n-Pentylbiphenyl derivatives were prepared and their electron spectra, phase transition temperatures and mesomorphic properties determined. Compounds with Z equals H, Br, I, NH//2, CN, CHO, NCS, NCO, N//3, COOH, CH//2COOH, CH//2Br, CH//2CN, COCH//3, CH//2-CH//2Cl, CH//2-CH//2CN, CH//2CHClCN, CH** equals **C**H**(**2**), C EQUVLNT CH, CH equals CHCN, C(CH//3) equals NOH, CH equals NOH, C(CH//3) equals NOC//2H//5, C//5H//1//1, C//6H//1//3, C//7H//1//5, COC//4H//9, COC//5H//1//1, COC//6H//1//3 were investigated. On the basis of compounds of formula 1, differing only by the kind of the terminal substituent Z, the effects of geometry, coupling, direction and magnitude of the dipole moment on their mesomorphic properties are discussed. These relationships suggest that the nematogenic properties of biphenyl derivatives depend chiefly on the ability of the molecules to associate linearly.
SYNTHESIS OF 4-ALKYL-4'-CYANOBIPHENYLS

, p. 1187 - 1191 (2007/10/02)
Liquid crystals of the 4-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl group were synthesized without the use of copper cyanide. 4-Alkyl-4'-formylbiphenyls and the 4-formyloximes of 4'-alkylbiphenyl, which possess a liquid-crystalline state, were isolated.Beginning with the pentyl homolog, they form an enantiotropic nematic phase, and beginning with octyl homolog they also form a smectic meso phase.
