New alkaloid cardenolides have been synthesized and their biological activity has been studied. It has been established that ajmalinocardenolides possess cardiotonic and antiarrhytmic activity with a low or moderate toxicity, while cardenolides derivatives of hyoscyamine and of scopolamine have proved to be highly toxic compounds.Using fluorescent probes it has been shown that the ajmalinocardenolides are sorbed fairly strongly on liposome membranes, and they also promote the binding of calcium ions by biological membranes.
