The factors that control the regioselective addition of phosphorylsulfenyl chlorides to arylethylenes are the electronic effect of the substituent in the unsaturated compound and the steric effect of the alkoxy groups on the phosphorus of the electrophile. An AdE2 scheme is proposed that includes the formation by parallel routes of cyclic intermediates, in the stabilization of which the phosphorus group of the sulfenyl chloride participates.
