Description
Sodium sulfide hydrate, also known as sodium sulfide nonahydrate, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2S·9H2O. It is a colorless, white, or yellow crystalline solid that has an odor of rotten eggs. The compound is deliquescent, has a density of 1.43 g/cm3, and decomposes at about 50°C. It is very soluble in water, resulting in a strongly alkaline aqueous solution, and is slightly soluble in alcohol but insoluble in ether. Sodium sulfide nonahydrate participates in the conversion of nitroxides to amines through reduction.
Uses
Used in Dye Industry:
Sodium sulfide hydrate is used as a sulfur dyestuff for the production of sulfur dyes. It is also employed as a depilatory agent in the leather industry for dehairing of hides.
Used in Textile Industry:
In the textile industry, sodium sulfide nonahydrate is used for rayon denitration and as a dyeing auxiliary. It is also used in cotton printing.
Used in Chemical Synthesis:
Sodium sulfide hydrate serves as a precursor material for the preparation of cadmium sulfide quantum dots. It is also used in the synthesis of thioamides and as a catalyst during their synthesis.

Sodium sulfide nonahydrate is used in the pulp and paper industry for treating paper pulp and as a source of H2S for various applications.
Used in Mining Industry:
In the mining industry, sodium sulfide is used for extracting gold ores, where oxidized metal ores are converted to sulfides prior to froth flotation.

Preparation
Sodium sulfide is prepared by heating sodium bisulfate with sodium chloride and coal above 950°C. The product mixture is extracted with water and the hydrated sulfide is obtained from the solution by crystallization:
NaHSO4 + NaCl + 2C → Na2S + 2CO2↑ + HCl↑
Sodium sulfide also is produced from its elements in liquid ammonia:
Na + 2S → Na2S
Reactions
Sodium sulfide in solid form reacts with carbon dioxide in the presence of moisture to form hydrogen sulfide and sodium carbonate. Thus, the H2S odor of sodium sulfide crystals is attributed to its exposure to moist air:
Na2S + H2O + CO2 → Na2CO3 + H2S
In aqueous solution, sodium sulfide reacts with a number of metal salts forming insoluble sulfides.
When added to dilute mineral acids, hydrogen sulfide is generated.
