Highly efficient carbene and polycarbene catalysis of the transesterification reaction of ethyl benzoate in methanol has been observed and results in values of TON as high as 4000–6150 at a molar ratio of ester to methanol of 1:18 at room temperature. The most effective catalysts were found to be the individual carbenes or in situ generated carbenes, namely adamantyl and aromatic substituted cyclic compounds and polymeric carbenes. None of the reactions requires the use of molecular sieves. The polymeric imidazol-2-ylidene catalyst was used for the efficient production of biodiesel fuel from sunflower oil.

- Self-supported N-heterocyclic carbenes and their use as organocatalysts

The study of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as organocatalysts has proliferated in recent years, and they have been found to be useful in a variety of reactions. In an attempt to further expand their utility and to study their recyclability, we designed and synthesized a series of self-supported NHCs in which the catalytic carbene groups form part of a densely functionalized polymer backbone, and studied them as organocatalysts. Of the self-Supported NHCs examined, a benzimidazole derived polymer with flexible linkers connecting the catalytic groups was found to be the most efficient organocatalyst in a model benzoin condensation reaction, and thus it was used in a variety of such reactions, including some involving catalyst recycling. Furthermore, it was also used to catalyze a set of redox esterification reactions involving conjugated unsaturated aldehydes. In all of these reactions the catalyst afforded good yield of the desired product and its polymeric nature facilitated product purification.

- Fluoro-functionalized polymeric N-heterocyclic carbene-zinc complexes: Efficient catalyst for formylation and methylation of amines with CO2 as a C1-building block

A fluoro-functionalized polymeric N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-Zn complex (F-PNHC-Zn) was designed and synthesized by taking fluorous imidazolium salts as precursors through a two-step alkylation. The resultant F-PNHC-Zn was applied in catalyzing the formylation and methylation of amines using CO2 as a C1 building block in the presence of organosilane, which showed much higher activity than the corresponding non-fluorous PNHC-Zn under identical conditions. N-Methylanilines with both electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups all could be converted to the corresponding formamides and methylamines in >90% conversion. Quantitative conversion of N-methylaniline was obtained even under very low CO2 pressure (0.05 MPa diluted by N2). Moreover, F-PNHC-Zn was highly stable and easily recyclable for these reactions. - Ag(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of N-allyl substituted imidazol-2-ylidenes with ortho-, meta- and para-xylyl spacers: Synthesis, crystal structures and in vitro anticancer studies

A series of N-allyl substituted xylyl-linked imidazolium salts (7-10) and their respective Ag(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes (11-14) have been synthesized and characterized by a number of spectral and analytical techniques. Molecular structure of complexes 13 and 14 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. The in vitro anticancer activity of all imidazolium salts and their Ag(I)-carbene complexes were investigated using human colorectal (HCT 116) cancer cell lines. Imidazolium salts displayed no activity for HCT 116 cell lines, except for 9; yielding IC50 value of 15.9 μM. Ag(I)-carbene complexes 12-14 showed exceptionally good activity (0.9-1.3 μM) against tested cancer cell lines. Furthermore, complex 11 displayed relatively good anticancer activity with IC50 value of 5.2 μM, which is almost equal to standard used.
