The condensation of decyl aldehyde and 4-pyridinecarbaldehyde (1:1) with pyrrole in propionic acid gave a mixture of meso-substituted porphyrins.The previously unknown 5,10,15,20-tetranonylporphyrin, 5-(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-trinonylporphyrin, 5,15-di(4-pyridyl)-10,20-dinonylporphyrin, 5,10-di(4-pyridyl)-10,20-dinonylporphyrin, and 5,10,15-tri(4-pyridyl)-20-nonylporphyrin and the previously described 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin were isolated from the mixture by column chromatography.
