The products from polar rearrangement, i.e., acyl alkyl carbonates, are formed during the thermolysis of (2-methylpropionyl)-4-nitrophenylacetyl, (2-methylpropionyl)-4-chlorophenylacetyl, (2-methylpropionyl)phenylacetyl, and (2-methylpropionyl)-4-methylphenylacetyl peroxides. The direction of rearrangement depends on the ability of the substituents to stabilize the positive charge in the transition state. The ionization potentials of the corresponding free radicals are proposed as characteristics of this ability.
