Polyquaternium-10 is a range of polymeric quaternary ammonium salts of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) reacted with trimethyl ammonium substituted epoxide. It is a cellulose polymer and conditioning agent used in various formulations, offering benefits such as improved wet combing and reduced static charge. Polyquaternium-10 solutions are non-Newtonian and are commercially available in several viscosity grades depending on their molecular weights, contributing to the viscosity of formulations. In vivo tests have shown that these cationic cellulosic polymers protect the skin from aggression by anionic surfactants.
Used in Hair Care Industry:
Polyquaternium-10 is used as a hair conditioning and protection agent for its ability to form negatively charged complexes with excess anionic surfactant, resulting in reduced deposition due to repulsion by the negatively charged hair surface.
