EUGENIA CARYOPHYLLUS (CLOVE) LEAF OIL is a natural essential oil derived from the leaves of the clove plant, known for its characteristic odor of eugenol. It is obtained through steam distillation, yielding around 2-3% of oil, with a typical yield of 2% from the leaves. The oil is initially yellow but turns dark violet upon aging in iron containers. It is soluble in propylene glycol and most fixed oils, with slight opalescence, but relatively insoluble in glycerin and mineral oil. The chemical composition includes a minimum of 80% phenol content, with eugenol being the predominant component (80-92%), followed by caryophyllene (4-17%) and eugenol acetate (0.2-1%). Major producers of this oil are Madagascar, Indonesia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and Brazil, with a global production of approximately 2,000 tons.

Essential oil composition

The oil has a high concentration of eugenol, making it a preferred source for eugenol and subsequent conversion to isoeugenol, derivatives of eugenol and vanillin. Trace quantities of naphthalene and a bicyclic sesquiterpene alcohol may be present in the leaf oil. Little or no eugenyl acetate is present.

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion and skin contact. A severe skin irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and fumes.
