Deslorelin is a synthetic peptide hormone analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), also known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). Used in Veterinary Medicine:
Deslorelin is used as a reproductive control agent for inducing ovulation in estrous mares and controlling reproduction in dogs. It helps manage the reproductive cycle in these animals, ensuring better breeding outcomes and preventing unwanted pregnancies.
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Under the brand name Somagard [as acetate], Deslorelin is manufactured and distributed by Roberts Pharmaceutical. This formulation allows for the effective administration of the hormone, making it a valuable tool in the veterinary pharmaceutical market for managing animal reproduction.

Veterinary Drugs and Treatments

Deslorelin is approved for inducing ovulation in estrual mares. There is also interest in developing dosages and dosage forms as a long-term, reversible contraceptive in a variety of animal species, as a treatment for prostatic disease in male dogs, and incontinence in ovariectomized dogs. At the time of writing, deslorelin in not available in the USA, but is marketed in Canada. In humans, deslorelin has been investigated for treating children with precocious puberty, and in adults for prostate carcinoma, dysmenorrhea, fibroids, and endometriosis.
