Description
Colesevelam, also known as Colesevelam Hydrochloride or Welchol, is a non-absorbable, water-insoluble polymer that acts as a bile acid-sequestering agent. It is a more recent addition to the class of bile acid-sequestering agents and has a unique structure that allows it to selectively bind to trihydroxy and dihydroxy bile acids. This selectivity contributes to its reduced side effects compared to older agents like cholestyramine and colestipol. Colesevelam does not possess chloride ions and is not an anion-exchange resin. Its affinity for hydroxyl systems enables it to "pick up" water, resulting in softer, gel-like materials that are easier to excrete.
Uses
1. Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
Colesevelam is used as a bile acid sequestrant for reducing elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in patients with primary hyperlipidemia. By binding and blocking bile acids, it compels the removal of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream into the liver, thus lowering the risk of vascular disease.
2. Used in Diabetes Management:
Colesevelam is used as a treatment to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Its unique water-absorbing hydrogel formulation allows it to be used as a monotherapy or in combination with statins, producing an additional reduction in LDL-cholesterol levels.
3. Used in Antimicrobial Applications:
Colesevelam is also used for its antibacterial properties, providing an additional layer of health benefits for patients using it for cholesterol and diabetes management.

Drug interactions
Potentially hazardous interactions with other drugs
Antidiabetic agents: absorption of glipizide,
glibenclamide and glimepiride reduced, administer at
least 4 hours before colesevelam; metformin extended
release exposure increased, monitor carefully.
Ciclosporin: may reduce absorption of ciclosporin.
Olmesartan: absorption of olmesartan reduced,
administer at least 4 hours before colesevelam.
Metabolism
Not absorbed.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 182815-44-7 includes 9 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 6 digits, 1,8,2,8,1 and 5 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 4 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 182815-44:
(8*1)+(7*8)+(6*2)+(5*8)+(4*1)+(3*5)+(2*4)+(1*4)=147
147 % 10 = 7
So 182815-44-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
