16919-58-7 Usage

Description

Ammonium chloroplatinate, also known as ammonium hexachloroplatinate(IV), is a chemical compound with the formula (NH4)2PtCl6. It is a crystalline solid that can be orange-red or yellow in color, and it decomposes upon heating. Ammonium chloroplatinate is known for its use in various industrial applications, particularly in the field of electroplating and the production of platinum-based materials.

Uses

1. Used in Electroplating Industry:
Ammonium chloroplatinate is used as a plating agent for the electroplating of platinum. It is an essential component in the process of depositing a thin layer of platinum onto a substrate, which is crucial for various applications that require the unique properties of platinum, such as corrosion resistance, high melting point, and excellent electrical conductivity.
2. Used in Manufacturing of Spongy Platinum:
Ammonium chloroplatinate is also utilized in the production of spongy platinum, a highly porous form of the metal. Spongy platinum is valuable for its high surface area to volume ratio, making it ideal for applications such as catalysts, electrodes, and filters.
3. Used in the Preparation of Diamagnetic Materials and Semiconductors:
Ammonium chloroplatinate reacts with copper(II) acetate and hydrogen sulfide to form Cu2PtIIPt3IVS8, which is an important compound in the development of diamagnetic materials and semiconductors. These materials have a wide range of applications, including in the electronics industry for the production of various components and devices.
4. Used as an Analytical Reagent:
Due to its unique chemical properties, ammonium chloroplatinate is also employed as an analytical reagent in the field of chemistry. It is used for the detection and quantification of specific substances, as well as in the study of chemical reactions and processes.

Flammability and Explosibility

Notclassified

Safety Profile

Poison by inhalation and ingestion. Human pulmonary system effects by inhalation. See also PLATINUM COMPOUNDS. An explosively unstable compound. Incompatible with KOH (boiling with alkali yields a product which, after drying, will explode @ 205' or if mixed with combustibles). When heated to decomposition it emits very toxic fumes of Cl-, NOx, and NH3.

Potential Exposure

It is used in photography, platinum plating and in the manufacture of platinum sponge.

Shipping

UN3288 Toxic solids, inorganic, n.o.s., Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials, Technical Name Required.

Incompatibilities

This material is unstable and potentially explosive. Incompatible with strong oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides.

Waste Disposal

Because of the high value of the metal, recovery is the economically indicated disposal method.

Check Digit Verification of cas no

The CAS Registry Mumber 16919-58-7 includes 8 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 5 digits, 1,6,9,1 and 9 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 5 and 8 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 16919-58:
(7*1)+(6*6)+(5*9)+(4*1)+(3*9)+(2*5)+(1*8)=137
137 % 10 = 7
So 16919-58-7 is a valid CAS Registry Number.

The first fluoride A2[PtF6] of the K2PtCl6 type: β-Cs2[PtF6]

Bork,Hoppe

, p. 417 - 424 (1996)

For the first time, yellow cubic single crystals of Cs2[PtF6] have been obtained by solid state reaction, heating (Pt-tube, 35 d, 800°C) the fluorination product of an intimate mixture of (NH4)2PtCl6 and 2 CsCl (diluted F2, F2:N2 = 1:5, 10 d, 400°C). The new form is isostructural with K2PtCl6: Fm3m; a = 905.5(2) pm; Z = 4 (Guinier-de Wolff data, CuKα1); R = 2.32% (SHELX-76); 1398 I0(hk1), Image-Plate diffractometer data (Stoe IPDS). It is compared with already known α-Cs2[PtF6] (K2GeF6-type, P3m1). The Madelung-Part of Lattice Energy, MAPLE, Effective Coordination Numbers, ECoN, and Mean Fictive Ionic Radii, MEFIR, are calculated and discussed in comparison with the data of further Hexafluoroplatinates(IV). A complete analysis of MAPLE was carried out for the title compound as well as for the α- and a hypothetical α′-form. Johann Ambrosius Barth 1996.
