1312-81-8 Usage

Description

Lanthanum oxide, also known as Lanthana, is a white amorphous powder with a density of 6.51 g/cm3. It melts at 2,305°C and vaporizes at 4,200°C. Lanthanum oxide is insoluble in water and dissolves in dilute mineral acids. It is an alkaline earth oxide and a diamagnetic, isostructural analog of neodymium oxide. It is also an efficient recyclable catalyst, used in coupling various aryl halides with aromatic/alkyl thiols.

Uses

Used in Glass and Ceramics Industry:
Lanthanum oxide is used as an ingredient in nonsilica, rare element optical glass with oxides of tungsten, tantalum, and thorium. It increases the refractive index and decreases dispersion, improving the quality of the glass.
Used in Electronics Industry:
Lanthanum oxide is used in the manufacture of carbon-arc electrodes, which are essential components in various electronic devices.
Used in Lighting Industry:
Lanthanum oxide is used in the production of fluorescent lamps, specifically in La-Ce-Tb phosphors that enhance the light output.
Used in Analytical Chemistry:
Lanthanum (III) oxide is used as an analytical standard in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) for the chemical characterization of ancient pottery.
Used in Material Science:
Lanthanum (III) oxide serves as a precursor to LAMOX fast ion conductors and superconductors. It is also used in the production of optical glasses, piezoelectric, and thermoelectric materials.
Used in X-ray Imaging:
Lanthanum oxide is used in X-ray imaging intensifying screens, which speed up x-ray exposure and reduce diagnostic dosages by as much as 80% with fewer retakes.
Used in Catalysts:
Lanthanum oxide is used as a catalyst to effect certain organic transformations and is one of the active ingredients in thermoelectric and piezoelectric materials.
Used in Silicon Nitride and Zirconium Diboride Production:
Lanthanum oxide is used as a grain growth additive during the liquid phase sintering of Silicon Nitride and Zirconium Diboride, improving the properties of these materials.
Used in FCC Catalysts and Lanthanum Metal Production:
Low-grade Lanthanum oxide is widely used in ceramics, FCC catalysts, and as a raw material for Lanthanum Metal production.

Preparation

Lanthanum oxide can be produced by direct combustion of lanthanum in oxygen or air. The oxide also may be prepared by decomposition of an oxo salt of lanthanum, such as nitrate, sulfate, carbonate, hydroxide or oxalate. La(CO3)3?8H2O → La2O3 + 3CO2 + 8H2O 2La2(C2O4)3?9H2O + 3O2 → 2La2O3 + 12CO2 + 18H2O
