with byproducts CuS and polysulfide18 via desulphurization.19
On the other hand, oxidative addition of aryl iodide with
copper(I) species can lead to the formation of K, which can
undergo intermolecular C–N cross-coupling reaction20 with the
unsubstituted cyanamide using base to give intermediate L that
can complete the catalytic cycle by reductive elimination to get
target product aromatic cyanamide (2a).

Conclusions
An efficient one-pot methodology was developed for the synthesis
of aromatic cyanamides from thiourea using a cheap, readily
available and air stable copper source as a catalyst under moderate
reaction conditions. The reaction protocol involves desulphuriza-
tion followed by C–N cross-coupling techniques. All the substrates
were found to give their corresponding target products in good to
excellent yields. Further, the scope of the compounds was also
extended to substituted tetrazolamines.
